With this scene I have changed to an old Mac desktop which meant a lot of my higher demanding tasks, like fur!, took a while longer to work through.
I am still using Maya Autodesk with Mental Ray rendering.
SO once again we are covering the 3D challenges found here: http://www.3drender.com/challenges/
This Hare/Bunny/Rabbit was created by Jeremy Birn and I actually quite like the shape of him/her.
Anyway, basically I started off following this amazing tutorial on Xgen Maya fur creation and rendering:
http://www.creativebloq.com/3d/how-master-hair-and-fur-maya-71412500
A rough UV for colour and to help it become less patchy.
Now after a few freezes and waiting hours on end for my mac to do anything I managed to creating this... I knew there was a lot to do from here and I decided to make a note for myself. This can help me slowly create the scene in how i imagine would look better.
At the moment this is with 2 lights active only.
NOTE. Check outliner to make sure you have a geoshader on your objects otherwise fur wont render.
Check Hypershader for the xgen to create specular and colour shines. (i don't know what each of these do exactly yet but this is what I tend to make up do far)
I learnt to render more in every change, as fur can sometimes be more unpredictable.
Learn what to do when the fur doesn't seem to come through the model (like the feet).
Practise grooming on a different model scale.

- please check it out, its useful and he cracks me up with his Northern Jokes.
Here is the XGen fur on the model as is first created. This isn't the actual hairs, but an idea as to what the fur/hairs may be doing. What direction/length/ clumping they are in relation to each other and the surface.
Rabbit Butt.
Initially the fur was patchy, down to density and it actually being under the model its self.

After a lot of time, and crashes and adjusting... I have got this far with my fur render.
I added two more lights with a blue and yellow tone, and changed the eyes, the fur length and grass.
I may need a more powerful computer to keep up with fur, maybe i'll attempt this on my PC again.
