Fruit Bowl

I've tried this new 'Light Challenge'.. well it's not a new one, but I've only just come across it. Basically it encourages 3D artists and modelers to explore light and learn something new using the available objects and scenes.
Find the challenge here: http://www.3drender.com/challenges/

So here is a fruit bowl. As I said the models haven't been created by me, however I did texture and light up the scene. This is the first time I did the process from start to finish and I came across A LOT of problems. Most of which were setting up issues that I didn't know about. Thank you google, you are my friend.

Total lights: 5

This is modeled originally by Dan Wade (Renowned 3D artist check him out)

Here is the model without render. It looks lighter than you'd think, so make sure you check renders constantly. The wire mesh is below, to show what the model looked like.

Turn off lights so you can see whats effecting what. I also tend to turn my colours all unnatural so I can see what light is hitting where on my scene. Its a good way to check if its too much, or not quite hitting the areas you need. Anyway here are some screen grabs so you can tell the difference.

Now what i found in this process is that everything I did, EVERYTHING, had a problem and needed to be set up and adjusted. From exporting models, to texturing, UV mapping, to even downloading Mental Ray, yes it took a while to even work that one out. But i got there in the end.

However, the very last thing, which you would think is imposible, is saving. How can that go wrong you ask? well if you don't have a correct output/ saving setting your image (which will look fine in Maya) will look like this:

So remember to save in colour management, this can be found in the Render view and you press the little box in the save image drop down.

And these are the final results!
I have learnt:
 95% is trail and error.
Don't stop, give your self time.
Textures are important.
I need to know more about light using colours.
I like my grapes, but i need to work on pixel models.

As you can see there are problems with the placement, normal maps, the smoothing of the models, but I'm pretty proud to be doing something I enjoy, and actually achieving a final render of something.

Im leaving this here as a memory for me, this is a good setting to have (32) for a light shadow.

What I did: UV, Texture, Lights
How long it took: 3 days
What to do better: Texture, Smoothing, everything should already be downloaded now!

Bring on the next challenge!

Laundry Room

Inspired by the cacti craze, I decided to make a laundry room with sed plants in to make it a nice happy place that I would like to do my chores in. These are my ink drawings: You only need to take these simple ideas into Photoshop for spacing and size when modeling! And from this I started to create in Maya...

Kitchen Lights

My second crack at lighting with this kitchen scene. I managed to do some Texture Maps, sort some of the UV's add Normal maps in places and I even had some fun with a specular map. again the challenge can be found here along with the model, http://3drender.com/challenges/ This kitchen scene was modeled by Jeremy Birn. After adding all the detail I wanted. I just added lights. I'm not entirely sure what Im doing, but it seemed to go okay. Just had to make sure they looked semi realistic and the right colour... heh. ^^^ This mess is what I call my lights. Just to show myself the specular map. White is shiny. For the specular map I used these brushes: https://www.brusheezy.com/brushes/6697-splatters-and-stains-photoshop-brushes Ok now, this is how many times (plus at least 10 more, i changed my lights.) You can see by this point I wanted to add something more. Hence the table. I changed a lot of materials, mainly between blinn and lambert ...

The Rose

I decided yesterday to go out and create something small, but see what I could do with it.. I chose the rose. And using this tutorials I slowly built up my rose model. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78Ll-0Z6KM8&feature=share I then wasn't sure how to pose my rose, or present it and of course I thought of beauty and the beast. SO here is the inspired beauty and the beast rose.  My tests below are all about lighting, its the most infuriating yet satisfying thing with 3D.   (I wanted the 'Disney' glow)  Here I decided my marble table needed some bump mapping.  By this point everything I was doing was minimal and half the time I didn't even have a clue. So I pause to look at my maps. Texture, bump and transparency.  (under the petals, adds a little colour) Here this confused me... I still wouldn't be able to tall you straight off which colour is see through and which isn't. But basically black and white inve...
