UV Mapping Hints and Tips

Thoughts whilst UV Mapping

I found it difficult to find easy hints and tips about UV mapping, so for my own benefit I put together a list of tips that remind me of ways to be efficient when UV mapping.

I have been using Maya for this process.

I'm not going to explain how each stage is done, I just wanted to put this together for myself and anyone else that is interested.

1. Only place your maps on the +1 section of the graph use all the space

2. Use as much space as you can on the grid
3. Scale down the shells of sides that wont directly be on show to save space

4. Do this without overlapping any UV Shells
5. Mirror UVs if you know the texture will be the same on both sides of your model.
6. Apply the checkered material colour to adjust the UVs to prevent warping.

7. Be intelligent where you place your seams

8. Make sure there is a little bit of space or 'bleed' between the shells

Laundry Room

Inspired by the cacti craze, I decided to make a laundry room with sed plants in to make it a nice happy place that I would like to do my chores in. These are my ink drawings: You only need to take these simple ideas into Photoshop for spacing and size when modeling! And from this I started to create in Maya...

Kitchen Lights

My second crack at lighting with this kitchen scene. I managed to do some Texture Maps, sort some of the UV's add Normal maps in places and I even had some fun with a specular map. again the challenge can be found here along with the model, http://3drender.com/challenges/ This kitchen scene was modeled by Jeremy Birn. After adding all the detail I wanted. I just added lights. I'm not entirely sure what Im doing, but it seemed to go okay. Just had to make sure they looked semi realistic and the right colour... heh. ^^^ This mess is what I call my lights. Just to show myself the specular map. White is shiny. For the specular map I used these brushes: https://www.brusheezy.com/brushes/6697-splatters-and-stains-photoshop-brushes Ok now, this is how many times (plus at least 10 more, i changed my lights.) You can see by this point I wanted to add something more. Hence the table. I changed a lot of materials, mainly between blinn and lambert ...

The Rose

I decided yesterday to go out and create something small, but see what I could do with it.. I chose the rose. And using this tutorials I slowly built up my rose model. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78Ll-0Z6KM8&feature=share I then wasn't sure how to pose my rose, or present it and of course I thought of beauty and the beast. SO here is the inspired beauty and the beast rose.  My tests below are all about lighting, its the most infuriating yet satisfying thing with 3D.   (I wanted the 'Disney' glow)  Here I decided my marble table needed some bump mapping.  By this point everything I was doing was minimal and half the time I didn't even have a clue. So I pause to look at my maps. Texture, bump and transparency.  (under the petals, adds a little colour) Here this confused me... I still wouldn't be able to tall you straight off which colour is see through and which isn't. But basically black and white inve...
