The Disney Challange (and getting back into drawing)

Having been quite busy for a few years with traveling and the life of a bartender I lost track of creating art, especially digital art.

I wanted to inspire myself to doodle and sketch when I could, but I wasn't sure where to start. When I spoke to one of my best friends Michelle (who is an amazing artist feel free to check her out - https://www.facebook.com/michellemarhamart) suggested that I did a challenge, one of those 15/30 day challenges. Something easy, simple, to get my back into the game and she linked me this:

I love Disney, and so the deal was done!

The one thing I had to remember, was not to force myself to draw everyday but to sit down and do it when I had time. And of course enjoy it like the child I am.

Day 1
(Yourself as a Disney Character)

Drawing myself as a Disney character was difficult. I referenced the eyes from a princess and spend a while on the pose and line work. After doing the block colour and shading i covered the whole thing in texture

Day 2
(Favorite Pair)

Having no care for the background, I've kinda left it as it much as I could be bothered... Probably not the true makings of an artist as you're meant to be patient....!

Day 3
(Fav Hero)

My favourite character hero as a kid would have to be Robin Hood himself! I wanted to pick a version of him thats a little different. I tried to focus on creating strong lines here and working inwards with colour blocks and the tones and shades. I'm unsure if this worked out the best way for me.

Day 4
(Fav Heroine)

My Heroine, Sassy from Homeward Bound. When she rescues that kitten from the fire! Ahh! This was a little freer by hand on the fur.

Day 5
(Fav Quote)

'I despise guessing games.' - Scar Lion King. I can still hear the tone in his voice.

Day 6
(Fav Obscure Character)

'If this is torture, chain me to the wall!' - Oliver and Company

Day 7
(Fav Side Kick)

I feel like I'm trying out so many different styles here, so this is interesting. I'm enjoy this version of a quick sketch. Thumper is the coolest friend.

Day 8
(Most Evil Villain)

So this is strange, but basically this sperm whale from Pinocchio gave me a life long fear of under water and creatures with mouths that eat people. So pretty evil to me!

Day 9
(Zombify a character)

I wasn't sure I wanted to do this... but here is a simple Snow White zombie.

Day 10
(Evil Good Character)

Marry Poppins is asking her bird friend to find some more children. She sings her requests of course..

Day 11
(Good Evil Character)

Frollo, yes from Hunchback, is actually praying to the Virgin Mary here. But is enlightened, not fantasizing over the 'woman with raven hair.'.

Day 12
(Character in Pajamas)

Little Gepetto 's cat stole his hat! Cute Figaro.

Day 13
(A Pet I Want)

Meko was my favourite always, I wish he was mine. Stealing biscuits for me!

Laundry Room

Inspired by the cacti craze, I decided to make a laundry room with sed plants in to make it a nice happy place that I would like to do my chores in. These are my ink drawings: You only need to take these simple ideas into Photoshop for spacing and size when modeling! And from this I started to create in Maya...

Kitchen Lights

My second crack at lighting with this kitchen scene. I managed to do some Texture Maps, sort some of the UV's add Normal maps in places and I even had some fun with a specular map. again the challenge can be found here along with the model, http://3drender.com/challenges/ This kitchen scene was modeled by Jeremy Birn. After adding all the detail I wanted. I just added lights. I'm not entirely sure what Im doing, but it seemed to go okay. Just had to make sure they looked semi realistic and the right colour... heh. ^^^ This mess is what I call my lights. Just to show myself the specular map. White is shiny. For the specular map I used these brushes: https://www.brusheezy.com/brushes/6697-splatters-and-stains-photoshop-brushes Ok now, this is how many times (plus at least 10 more, i changed my lights.) You can see by this point I wanted to add something more. Hence the table. I changed a lot of materials, mainly between blinn and lambert ...

The Rose

I decided yesterday to go out and create something small, but see what I could do with it.. I chose the rose. And using this tutorials I slowly built up my rose model. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78Ll-0Z6KM8&feature=share I then wasn't sure how to pose my rose, or present it and of course I thought of beauty and the beast. SO here is the inspired beauty and the beast rose.  My tests below are all about lighting, its the most infuriating yet satisfying thing with 3D.   (I wanted the 'Disney' glow)  Here I decided my marble table needed some bump mapping.  By this point everything I was doing was minimal and half the time I didn't even have a clue. So I pause to look at my maps. Texture, bump and transparency.  (under the petals, adds a little colour) Here this confused me... I still wouldn't be able to tall you straight off which colour is see through and which isn't. But basically black and white inve...
